The World Superbike Champions were at Philip Island this weekend and the Australian Support races proved to be every bit as exciting for the spectators.
Judd arrived at Philip Island on Friday with only 1 day of riding since last season.
Two weeks prior it looked like Judd's racing career was over. Last years naming rights sponsor had not returned and the hoped MV Augusta Superbike challenge was stopped after the economic climate casued MV Augusta to withdraw their support as well.
With a lot of determination and a bit of luck, Judd with the continued support of Sunstate Racing and the help of Trinder Brothers Racing, One Stop Project Solutions and Sunstate Motorcycles has returned for the 2009 season.
Judd started the practice session on Friday with a flat tyre and only managed to get 3 laps practice on a new cold tyre. For Qualifying Judd did 2 flying laps and in pole position he returned to the pits to watch the rest of the field. Jamie Stauffer pipped Judd at the end of the session to take Pole. Judd happily took second spot on the front of the grid.
Saturday's first race was a closely contested non-points feature race which Bryan Staring won and Judd came second.
This just set the scene for what was to come.
Judd Greedy toppled the mighty factory teams in a stunning first points race.
Judd held off the factory Yamahas of Bryan Staring and reigning champion Jamie Stauffer, Judd’s all-white Bio-Magnetic Sunstate Motorcycles Suzuki and the blue Yamahas swapping positions for much of the eight lap race.
“I knew at the end of last year we had potential, I got awfully close to winning at Eastern Creek only to have the handlebar break, but two weeks ago it didn’t look like we could compete this year” Greedy said.
“Trinder Brothers Racing have helped put this all together. The bike’s not even painted, but I was determined to make amends for getting close last year. Today’s win is an extremely satisfying result.”
Sunday morning was cool and overcast and the second points race for the season was guaranteed to be exciting.
Judd Greedy and Bryan Staring swapped the lead half a dozen times throughout the eight-lap race and the pair survived a 200km/h coming together as they approached the chequered flag, Staring crossing the line first by just 0.01s.
Judd said he thought he had placed himself in the best position to win, and believed he and Staring had over-ridden for the slightly damp track conditions.
“It was drizzling at some parts of the circuit and dry at others, so we probably rode a little too fast over the last few laps,” Judd said. “If I was to be any chance of winning I had to lead onto the straight. I pulled left to try break the draft, I didn’t know he was on my inside and we touched fairings. “I put it all on the line and it was a great race, but not the result I really wanted.
“On a positive note, two weeks ago I didn’t have a ride so despite a lack of preparation, we’ve got a race win and we’re equal first in points, so it’s been a real good start for us.”
